When is it too much?
For many people drinking can be a fun activity to do with friends. For other people, drinking can be something they do every night after work. But when does drinking become a problem? When do you say you are having too much? How do you know if you have an addiction? AND Why should you care?
In the counseling world, addiction, which is referred to as Substance Use disorder, “is a cluster of cognitive, behavioral, and physiological symptoms indicating that the individual continues using the substance despite significant substance-related problems” (DSM-5, 2013, p.483). Basically, addiction is when people continue to use a substance or continue a behavior even though it is causing problems in their life.
When looking at addition it is important to note that people can be addicted to multiple things. People can be addicted to alcohol, drugs, and gambling. Some have even argued that sexual behaviors can be addicting.
You should care about your substance use and unhealthy behaviors because you should care about your family and yourself. When a person suffers from an addiction other parts of their lives suffer. People many not be able to maintain a job, maintain their relationships, or maintain happiness. You do not deserve to have a life that suffers.
